ADHD Assessment

Whether you're seeking an ADHD assessment, autism assessment, or ongoing therapy, all appointments are conducted online via a secure video platform so you can access support from wherever you are in Australia.

Does this sound familiar?

You’ve been wondering for a while whether ADHD might explain some of the patterns you’ve noticed. The forgetfulness. The difficulty staying on task. The feeling of working twice as hard as everyone else just to keep up.

Or maybe you’re a parent watching your teenager struggle at school, with friendships, with motivation?

A formal ADHD assessment might give you real answers. A thorough, evidence-based assessment by a registered psychologist with detailed report, recommendation and next steps.

ADHD can look different in adolescents and adults, and it often goes unrecognised for years, particularly in women, girls, and people who have developed coping strategies over time.

Information for Parents

An ADHD assessment for your teenager is a collaborative process:

Session 1: Parent consultation (without your adolescent): The assessment begins with a dedicated session for you alone. This includes a structured clinical interview where you'll be asked about what you've observed at home, at school, and in your child's relationships, without your teenager in the room. Your perspective as a parent is an essential part of building an accurate and complete picture.

Session 2: Adolescent session: The second session is held directly with your teenager. This includes a structured clinical interview giving them their own private space to share their experience in their own words.

Additional parent sessions, if needed: ADHD assessments at Mindlab are thorough. If further information is needed from you at any point, an additional session/s will be scheduled. You'll always be informed of this during the process.

Is an ADHD Assessment right for you?

You may benefit from an ADHD assessment if you frequently experience any of the following:

    • Difficulty sustaining focus on tasks, conversations, or reading

    • Frequently losing items, missing deadlines, or forgetting appointments

    • Feeling easily overwhelmed by everyday responsibilities

    • Acting impulsively or speaking without thinking

    • Struggling to organise tasks or follow through on plans

    • A persistent sense of underachievement despite your best efforts

    • Difficulty sitting still, or conversely, feeling mentally restless even when physically calm

    • Long-standing struggles at school, work, or in relationships that have never been fully explained

These experiences can significantly impact quality of life and many people carry them for years without understanding why. An assessment can provide the clarity, validation, and direction you need to move forward.

How an ADHD assessment can help

For many adolescents and adults, an ADHD diagnosis is the moment things start to make sense, the struggles at school, the unfinished projects, the missed deadlines, the feeling of always being one step behind no matter how hard you try.

Here is what an assessment can do for you or your young person:

  • Understanding why things feel harder than they should is powerful.

An assessment provides a clear, evidence-based picture of how your brain works, and why certain environments, tasks, or relationships have always felt more challenging.

  • So many people, especially adolescents and women have spent years being given certain labels because of difficulties associated with ADHD. A thorough assessment replaces that narrative with an accurate one.

  • For adolescents, a formal diagnosis can unlock academic accommodations at school or university, including extra time in exams, modified assessment conditions, and access to specialist learning support.

For adults, a detailed report can support applications for workplace adjustments, NDIS funding, or simply give you the language to advocate for yourself.

  • An assessment does not leave you with a diagnosis and nothing else. Your feedback session and written report include practical recommendations, so you leave with a clear sense of what to do next, not just what the diagnosis means.

  • An assessment can help understand yourself better, your unique strengths and challenges, that can help you plan ahead.

  • Autism/ADHD assessments are typically divided in 4 steps.

    Step 1: Clinical Intake Appointment

    • This initial appointment is approximately 50 minutes long.

    • The goal is to get to know you and gather comprehensive information, including your history and current circumstances across social, academic, and professional life, as well as your developmental history.

    Step 2: Standardised Assessment Appointment

    • Appointment involves the use of standardised assessment tools (either autism or ADHD).

    • A structured interview format is used to ask specific questions about your symptoms, their impact on your daily life, and your life growing up.

    • The session is usually 1.5 to 2 hours long and includes a 10 minute break.

Step 3: Information Gathering and Report Writing

    • During this stage, your psychologist gathers collateral information from family members (e.g., spouse, parents, siblings) who knew you before the age of 18. They will be sent forms to complete via email.

    • Simultaneously, your psychologist synthesises all the gathered information from the clinical interviews and forms to create a comprehensive report for you.

    • This process, including report writing, typically takes 4 - 6 weeks, after which you will be contacted for a feedback session.

    Step 4: Feedback Session

    • The final appointment involves receiving your comprehensive report and discussing the gathered information (30 - 50 minutes duration). Your psychologist will review whether the criteria for a diagnosis have been met. You can ask questions if you like and receive tailored recommendations for the next steps in your journey.

  • The detailed report is a comprehensive document (10+ pages) that covers your full history, assessment findings, and recommendations. It's useful for workplace accommodations, NDIS applications, or personal understanding. The summary letter is a shorter document confirming the diagnostic outcome, suitable if you mainly need documentation for a GP or psychiatrist.

  • No referral is needed to book directly. However, if you'd like to explore Medicare rebates (available for some autism assessments), you may need a referral from a Paediatrician or Psychiatrist.

  • Yes. A combined assessment is available for $2,200 with a detailed report. Many people find that assessing for both at once gives a more complete picture.

  • Current wait times for an initial intake appointment are approximately 2 weeks from the date of enquiry, though this may vary depending on availability. To secure your place, we recommend reaching out as early as possible.

    Request an Appointment

  • There's nothing special you need to do beforehand. It can be helpful to reflect on how symptoms have shown up across your life, at school, in relationships, and at work. We'll guide you through everything in your first appointment.

  • Your psychologist will review whether the diagnostic criteria have been met and discuss this with you in the feedback session. You'll receive either a confirmation of diagnosis or a clear explanation of the findings if criteria are not fully met.

  • Psychologists are not medical doctors and are not authorised to prescribe medication in Australia. If medication is something you wish to explore following your assessment, this would need to be arranged separately through your GP, who is the best first point of contact to discuss this pathway.

It is worth noting, however, that a psychological assessment and a medication consultation serve distinct purposes. Psychologists focus extensively on behavioural assessments and standardised testing to diagnose ADHD, conducting detailed evaluations that help understand an individual's behavioural context and cognitive profile. A psychological assessment can provide you with helpful strategies and coping mechanisms, and also allows you to explore deeper emotional experiences, such as shame, guilt, grief, and self-esteem, that can often stem from years of living with undiagnosed neurodivergence.
